If there’s an emergency need for blood at a hospital, the Red Cross has a pool of volunteers who will drop everything to make the drive, she said. “When we get a call for some extra units, it’s usually because of a major surgery,” Kuhlmann said. Surgeries, traumatic injuries, hemophilia, burn victims and cancer patients all require blood in some form. The reasons for needing blood are as varied as the people who donate it. “The fact we can say the blood supply is sufficient, that’s because we have the drives.” “Blood drives are a huge contributor to the blood we collect,” said Theresa Kuhlmann, communications and public relations specialist for the American Red Cross Heart of America Region. ![]()
